Why metal makes sense in North Florida
A metal roof reflects a large share of the sun that a dark shingle roof absorbs. In a Jacksonville August that difference shows up on your power bill, because your attic is no longer running twenty or thirty degrees hotter than it needs to.
The other reason is wind. Metal panels are mechanically fastened along their full length instead of relying on adhesive strips to hold each course down. Properly installed, they hold up in conditions that will strip a shingle roof.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Metal costs more up front — usually two to three times a shingle roof. It is the cheaper roof only if you plan to still own the house in twenty years. If you are selling in three, we will tell you that and quote you shingles.
It is also louder in heavy rain than most people expect, though solid decking and underlayment underneath cut that down substantially compared to metal over open purlins.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. Metal does not attract lightning. If a house is struck, a metal roof is actually safer than shingles because it is non-combustible and disperses the energy rather than igniting.
Will a metal roof lower my insurance premium?
Often yes, through a wind mitigation credit — but the credit depends on the fastening system and how it is documented on your inspection form, not on the material alone. We provide the documentation your inspector needs.
