Asphalt Shingles: The Right Choice for Most Jacksonville Homes

Three tiers, three price points, three very different lifespans. Here is an honest comparison — including when we would tell you to skip the upgrade.

Why most of Jacksonville is shingled

Asphalt shingle is the best value roof for the majority of homes here. It handles the climate well, it is fast to install, every roofer in the region knows how to work with it, and repairs are cheap and simple when something does go wrong.

We install Owens Corning shingles, which carry a 50-year limited warranty — lifetime for the original homeowner — on the shingle itself. Our own workmanship warranty runs ten years on top of that.

The three tiers, honestly compared

3-tab is the flat, uniform, budget option. Architectural is thicker and layered, lasts substantially longer, and is what we install on most homes. Luxury shingles are heavier still and imitate slate or cedar shake convincingly from the street.

The jump from 3-tab to architectural is almost always worth the money. The jump from architectural to luxury is an appearance decision — the performance difference is much smaller than the price difference, and we will say so.

Questions we get asked

What does the 50-year warranty actually cover?

It covers manufacturing defects in the shingle, on a limited and prorated basis after the initial period. It does not cover installation error — that is what our 10-year workmanship warranty is for. Full documentation comes with your contract.

How long does a shingle roof really last in Florida?

Less than the warranty length. Sun and heat here are hard on asphalt. Plan on roughly 15–20 years for architectural shingle in Jacksonville, and be skeptical of anyone promising 30.

What’s covered

Ten years on our labor, and a 50-year limited — lifetime for the original homeowner — warranty on the shingle itself, backed by Owens Corning.

Full limited-warranty documentation is provided with every contract and governs in all cases.
